"I certainly wish I'd had a journal like this when I was a kid"

Experts and parents 5 star reviews

"I love the focus on observation throughout... I think children will enjoy the journal and adults (parents and teachers) will find it a useful guide. It does, indeed, match the approach I advocate for connecting children with nature. Great work!"
Ruth Wilson, Ph.d National Authority on young children and nature; Children & Nature Network Research Library Curator
"This is a wonderful book to pick up for anyone heading out into nature. Whether it's camping, hiking, short trips for fun, picnics or whatever, this is a lovely book to take along. It's colorfully illustrated to keep the atmosphere fun and light. The descriptions are short and sweet, and never boring. Yes, I do recommend this one."
Bookworm For Kids
"The activity prompts are simple and engaging and the sectioned journal is absolutely perfect. Drawing what we heard, taping leaves to a page and, my child's favorite, looking for nuts, berries, or seeds, are now an established hobby. This is a wonderful book and I have no doubt others who pick it up will feel the same way."

Author and Naturalist

Stephen Nett

A few years ago I led  64 eager second graders up a dirt trail into these mountains on a four mile walk.  (It was supposed to be one classroom, but at the last minute …it grew.)  To prepare, I tried to find an explorer Journal they could carry – to record what they’d discover,  introduce basic observing skills, and offer some fun exploring activities.

I never found one.

So when I got back I started research and testing and created this one.  The focus is on observing, using all our senses.

It’s a book any parent can use, as well as teachers, other nature interpreters and nature guides.

One kids can use to lose themselves in nature, exploring and filling its pages with stories and discoveries.

I hope you and your youngsters enjoy it – let me know!

About me:  I earned my Naturalist certification from UC California in Yosemite National Park. I’m a guide, regularly published nature journalist and photographer, science editor for a National Laboratory, and lifelong hiker, with four children and three grandkids who are just starting to explore this marvelous natural world we live in.
