why kids need help exploring nature
Every child is loaded with abilities they need to explore the natural world.
But they don’t come with instructions.
So kids get bored, don’t know what to do, or miss all the amazing things going on around them outdoors.
Today children know a hundred product brands and media characters. How can we help them connect with all the real animals, birds and other creatures who still call this home?
This colorful Young Explorer Journal is designed to help. It has dozens of simple, Naturalist-tested missions to help kids discover their senses, and explore whats happening in the big natural world. They can use it to discover:
Where’s water? What is there for animals to eat? How many kinds of flowers can we find? How many things live in that tree? What’s the weather doing?
Comes with a fillable journal to help them record and remember, collect and treasure what they find.
Use as a family, group, or on their own to explore the backyard, park, camping, for school, field trip, parties or nature walk.

A few years ago I led 64 eager second graders up a dirt trail into these mountains on a four mile walk. (It was supposed to be one classroom, but at the last minute …it grew.) To prepare, I tried to find an explorer Journal they could carry – to record what they’d discover, introduce basic observing skills, and offer some fun exploring activities.
I never found one.

So when I got back I started research and testing and created this one. The focus is on observing, using all our senses.
It’s a book any parent can use, as well as teachers, other nature interpreters and nature guides.
One kids can use to lose themselves in nature, exploring and filling its pages with stories and discoveries.
I hope you and your youngsters enjoy it – let me know!
About me: I earned my Naturalist certification from UC California in Yosemite National Park. I’m a guide, regularly published nature journalist and photographer, science editor for a National Laboratory, and lifelong hiker, with four children and three grandkids who are just starting to explore this marvelous natural world we live in.
